HOW TO CHOOSE THE BATTERY FOR YOUR ELECTRIC BIKE KIT?

The battery is the heart of your electric bike and it is also the most expensive element. You will find in the following lines, the basic information you need to choose the battery that fits your needs. Several factors come into play when choosing the battery that will power your electric bike kit.

THE BUDGET

As you may have noticed, a lithium battery has a high price. The price of a lithium battery depends on one hand on the quality of the cells and the BMS that composes it but also on its capacity and voltage. With equal cell quality, the price of the battery will be proportional to the capacity: a 15Ah battery will cost about 50% more than a 10Ah battery. As the voltage increases, the number of battery components increases. A 48V 10Ah battery will therefore be more expensive than a 36V 10Ah battery. You therefore need to clearly identify your needs in terms of power (choice of cell quality), top speed (choice of voltage) and battery life (choice of capacity).

THE POWER OF YOUR KIT

To allow all budgets to equip themselves with an electric motorization for bicycles, we offer batteries of different voltage and capacity. The more powerful the engine of your electric bike kit, the more the battery will have to be "big", that is to say, to have enough energy to pass the power of the engine. For our 250W and 500W kits, you can choose a 36V battery. For more powerful kits, you will need a 48V battery.

THE DESIRED AUTONOMY

The more kilometers you want to travel with your bike, the greater the battery capacity will have to be: A 15Ah battery will give you 50% more autonomy than a 10Ah battery. If we talk about on-board energy (Wh), a 500Wh battery will offer you twice as much autonomy than a 250Wh battery.

In order to estimate the theoretical range, you can take as a reference calculation an energy consumption of 5Wh/km if you use the engine only to help you on steep slopes (sports use) or 10Wh/km if you pedal without sweating (daily trips).

Note that on a speed bike on which you ride at 45 km/h without pedaling or very little, the consumption can rise to 20Wh/km. Based on 10Wh/km, a 36V 15Ah battery (540Wh) will offer you a theoretical range of 54 km and a 36V 20Ah battery (720Wh) a theoretical range of 72Km. However, if you consume only 5Wh/km you can double these values of autonomy, which will give you 108km with a 500Wh battery and 144km with a 720Wh battery.capacité batterie

THE GEOMETRY AND POSITIONING OF YOUR BATTERY

We offer batteries with different geometries to adapt to all bikes and all practices. In most cases, we install the battery at the location of the bottle holder. On particular frames, it is sometimes preferable to install the battery in a frame bag, saddle or on the luggage rack.

THE BATTERY WEIGHT

You may have noted it, but the larger the battery capacity (Ah), the heavier the battery will be. If you buy a 500Wh OZO battery that weighs 3.3Kg and offers 100 to 130 km of range, the 700Wh OZO battery that offers 140 to 180Km of range will weigh 3.6kg. Do you know why OZO batteries are the lightest on the market? Where a 500Wh OZO battery will weigh 3.3Kg, a competing battery can weigh up to 5Kg. Yes, you read that correctly, 50% more mass for the same battery life.

Why?

Simply because we use the highest-end cells from major Japanese manufacturers, namely 3500mAh cells while inexpensive batteries are assembled with 2000mAh, 2200mAh or 2600mAh cells. Also note that these inexpensive batteries are also larger and generally have a shorter lifespan.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 36V AND 48V BATTERY

An electric bike in 48V will be more powerful than in 36V. For example, compare our ENDURO and FREERIDE electric conversion kits. These two kits are composed of the same motor, the Freerider and the same 22A controller. The only difference is the battery voltage. The Enduro has a 36V battery, whereas the Freeride is 48V. The freeride is therefore more powerful. To remind you of Ohm’s law, P=UxI, the Enduro will provide 36x22=792W and the Freeride 48Vx22=1056W. In practice, you will get 15% more torque and you will ride at 45km/h with Freeride against 35km/h with Enduro.

For the 250W road-approved kits, you will note that you have no choice, the battery will necessarily be in 36V.

OUR CHARGERS

Fast chargers, solar.. OZO offers a complete range of Lithium battery chargers to best suit your needs!

Image 1

Fast charger in 4A compatible with water bottle and frame batteries. 10A fast charger compatible with PVC batteries 1kWh or more.

Image 2

MPPT boost solar charger. Exclusive OZO, this charger will allow you to recharge your electric bike battery in the sun regardless of its voltage and the voltage at the solar panel output. One solar panel is enough, but the more panels you have, the faster the charging will be.

Image 3

Travel charger. It’s also an OZO exclusive. This charger allows you to charge the battery of your electric bike on the cigarette lighter socket of your car or camper.

ADAPTERS TO INSTALL THE BATTERY ON THE BIKE

If your bike is not equipped with a threaded insert to receive a canister door or if they are too low and do not allow you to screw properly, the OZO battery support rail offers two types of adapters: The adapter rail (to be used if your threaded inserts are too low) or the threaded adapters if you do not have an original threaded insert on your frame.

OUR BATTERIES ACCESSORIES

OZO offers accessories to protect your battery or allow you to use it on other applications than your bike: inverter, lawnmower, kayak, lighting, camping... Your eBike battery has a large on-board energy, it would be a shame to use it only on your bike!

Image 1

The frame battery cover provides protection against bad weather and cold. It offers a thermal insulation beneficial for the autonomy and will avoid dirt or scratches on your battery!

Image 2

The nylon and velcro holding strap has a non-slip surface and will improve the attachment of your battery to the frame. We recommend it in particular for mountain biking rides so as not to overload the threaded inserts with vibrations during descents.

Image 3

The inverter converts the DC voltage of your bike’s battery into an alternating voltage of 230V to power a coffee maker, computer, television, drill, lamp, sound system... Access energy autonomy wherever you are.

TO GO FURTHER WITH YOUR OZO BATTERY
