HOW DOES A CRANKSET ENGINE WORK?

Whether you are a novice or an amateur, it is always interesting to understand how the equipment of your eBike works. This can make it easier to identify a breakdown or simply to enhance one’s knowledge in a rapidly growing environment.

In this article, we focus on the Bafang pedal engine. This electric motor is available at OZO in several versions that differ in their power (from 250W for the BBS01 in 36V to 1500W for the BBSHD in 48V) but have the same operating principle, described in this article. This crank motor has a controller (diagram below) directly molded into the crankcase. Accessories (accelerator, brake cut-off, etc.) can then be added to this engine.

How does the crankset engine work?

The motor is controlled by the controller, which is itself powered by the battery. On the Bafang crankset engines from the OZO range, some engines operate at 36V and others at 48V.

The role of the controller is to transform the direct current from the battery into an alternating three-phase current that will flow through the motor winding. The winding is the copper part in the stator.

Since pedal motors are brushless motors, they consist of a wound stator and a magnetized rotor.

The crankset motor is available at OZO in several versions that differ in their power (from 250W for the BBS01 in 36V to 1500W for the BBSHD in 48V) but have the same operating principle.

The pedal motor includes a controller, two free wheels, two reduction stages and a pedal sensor. Accessories (accelerator, brake cut-off, etc.) can then be added to this engine.

The current variations in each coil will create a rotating magnetic field that will cause the rotor to rotate and therefore the motor shaft to rotate.

In addition to having several variants of engine power, the other advantage of this crankset motor sold at OZO is that there is the possibility to adapt several accessories so that your bike corresponds exactly to your use.

Throttle

In addition to the engine pedaling assistance, you can also install an accelerator on your bike. There are several types: trigger (quad type), handle or half-handle swivel (motorcycle type), with battery gauge, push button, etc...

Display

The display allows you to enter a lot of information about your journey (speed, range, assistance mode, etc...). Several models are available (black and white screen, color screen).

Brake cut-off

The brake cut-off is a safety accessory; it allows the engine to be switched off by simply pressing the brake. The brake cut-off sold at OZO is actually a sensor that integrates into your braking system. There are 3 types: the brake cut-off for cable brakes, the one for hydraulic brakes and the complete brake handle with integrated switch.

Coupure dérailleur

A derailleur cut-off allows the engine to be switched off during a gear change. This helps to avoid damaging your transmission, especially in mountain biking. It works on the same principle as the cable brake cut-off, with a sensor that integrates around the cable of the derailleur. When changing gears, the derailleur sensor detects the movement of the cable and cuts off the engine for a short time.

Transmission

It is possible to install a 32, 34 or 36 tooth gear to play on the behavior of your bike (torque, speed). An adapter is also available from OZO to integrate your tray with 4 holes (4x104mm), or 5 holes (5x110mm, 5x130mm or 5x135mm). The Bafang crankset engine also offers the possibility to install a double chainring.
